Flood Insurance

Water damage happens. Make sure you're better protected with good flood coverage.

Do Not Add to your Anguish

You have never seen rain like that in your neighborhood. Trees—thick trees—toppled on top of houses; stinking, filthy floodwater outside up to your ankles; rancid sewer water inside turning your stuff into sodden, wretched, worthless junk.

Three things: It happened so fast. This area had never been flooded before, ever. And three, you have no flood insurance.

However, your first thought among thousands, is what to do with your children?

Enormous Loss

Do not let yourself ever be placed in this position. Starting with a home displacement for an indefinite period of time to the enormous replacement costs, you have too much to lose.

In fact, loss due to flooding can be very expensive. A rule of thumb is that each inch of flooding will cost the unprotected over $7,000. The last thing you need are worries on how to pay for the flood damage. You do not want to add the anguish you already feel.

Contact Colley Insurance and receive a thorough education on how flood insurance works. We will review what it covers (appliances and items inside the home) and what it does not (decks and items outside the home).

The more your assets grow, the higher your liability risks are. No matter how well you’ve covered your bases, sometimes things go wrong. A car accident. A guest who slips and falls on your property. A lawsuit. If you don’t have the right coverage, an unfortunate situation can compromise your financial security and put your personal assets at risk.

An excess policy responds when the underlying liability limits of your other policies, such as home and auto, aren’t enough to cover the unexpected costs of a lawsuit or accident.

It is important to note that most Canadian insurance policies carry on average $1,000,000 of liability coverage. This limit can quickly become quickly exhausted and is very frequently limited to North America. The Group Personal Excess policy provided by Chubb Insurance provides up to $5M of worldwide coverage which extends to all dependent member of your house hold and also provides coverage for foreign owned assets.*

    * Territorial restrictions apply: Sudan, North Korea, Iran, Cuba, Syria

Watercraft 8 metres (26 feet) or longer or more than 50 engine rate horsepower for bodily injury and property damage in the minimum amount of $500,000 per each occurrence.

*The above liability limits must be in USD if the asset is located in the United States.

Each participant is covered for a $5 million limit of liability, and there is no annual aggregate on the policy.

Many people feel that Flood Insurance is for homes that are located near the coast or by large lakes or rivers. Nothing can be further from the truth!

“BUT I DON’T LIVE IN A FLOOD ZONE”

Extreme weather can and will happen. Floods and flash floods can occur all over the country. Torrential rains, clogged sewer drains, soaked grounds and snow melt will contribute to catastrophic flood emergencies.
Weather patterns are changing worldwide, a trend that’s affecting Canada directly. The devastating floods in Alberta and the Toronto area in 2013 highlighted a key environmental truth – our country is getting wetter. The end result is staggering: Average yearly rainfall in Canada has increased by 12% in the past 60 years, with 20 more days of rain a year since the 1950s and catastrophes like overland flooding are on the increase. Canada now has 20 times the storms and floods that we had just two decades ago – and major floods represent almost 40% of all natural disasters ever recorded in this country. According to Environment Canada, severe weather events that used to happen every 40 years can now be expected to happen every six years.
What is the real danger? The danger I’m talking about is not carrying a flood insurance policy. Even one inch of water in your home could cost you thousands of dollars in damages.

    So how does it work?

The availability of flood coverage for your home is quite new in Canada. The premiums are set based on the property location and amount of coverage requested. Properties are located in various “zones” and the price or availability of flood coverage is based on the “zone” you live in. The closer the dwelling is located to a body of water the greater the likelihood that it is in a higher risk flood hazard area. Flood insurance premiums are higher if a property is located in a high flood hazard area and coverage may not be available.
It may not be long before the lending institutions supplying your mortgage will require flood insurance.
Since the flood zones that insurance companies use may be different from those found on municipal flood maps in Ontario give us a call to find out how your home will be rated for flood coverage. Homes located in some higher flood hazard zones may be eligible for coverage based on the finished elevation of the dwelling and the type of foundation. In short, the higher the elevations of the structure off the ground, the less likely the chance of flood damage and the more likely that coverage is available.
We can review the “flood zone” in which your home is located, determine the structure and foundation type and review some coverage options and deductibles with you. Each of the members of our protection team are well versed in giving you the best coverage possible at a very competitive price.
