A new boat owner was having trouble pulling his boat into his slip at a local marina. Some of his marina neighbours saw him having trouble and walked out onto the dock to give him a hand. Each time the boat owner tried to pull into the slip the stern of his boat would get taken by the current just enough that the boat was on to much of an angle to pull in without banging the port side of his boat up against his neighbour's boat. On his final attempt he decided to give the throttle a little extra gas to keep the stern from drifting. In his frustration he jerked the throttle forward causing the boat to lunge and crash into the dock where his neighbours were waiting to help him.
The boat hit the dock hard enough that the neighbours all went for an unexpected swim. One man injured his shoulder when he hit the dock on his way into the water. The only person who ended up on the dock was the man's wife who was trying to pass a line to someone on the dock. She got catapulted from the boat onto the dock. She had to go to the hospital to get various scratches and abrasions patched up and was still pulling slivers out of her elbows and knees days later. There was significant damage to the bow of the boat.
This accident could have been so much more serious than it turned out to be. Every year about 200 people die in Canada in recreational boating accidents.
